Nepal Injury Research Centre (NIRC)

The Nepal Injury Research Centre (NIRC) is a national-level research center established at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC), Duwakot, in collaboration with the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, UK. It is funded by the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

About NIRC

The NIRC was officially launched on 6th September 2018 as part of a four-year research collaboration. It was established through a grant from the NIHR Global Health Research Programme (UK) and involves cooperation with multiple partner organizations.

The centre addresses the growing burden of injuries in Nepal by generating evidence and influencing policy and practice to reduce injury-related mortality and morbidity.

NIRC’s research is focused across four core themes:

  • Enhancing capacity and enabling sustainability

Collaborators

NIRC works in partnership with several national and international organizations, including:

  • Mother and Infant Research Activities (MIRA)
  • Nepal Red Cross Society

  • Safe Crossings
  • Centre for Injury Prevention Research Bangladesh (CIPRB)
  • University of Bristol, UK

Funding

NIRC is funded by the UK Government through a series of grant awards:

  • NIHR Global Health Research Programme (July 2017 – June 2021)
  • NIHR Global Health Policy and Systems Research Programme Development Award (March 2020 – May 2021)
  • University of the West of England – Global Challenges Research Fund QR Award (August 2018 – July 2021)
