How Is It Done?
The patient walks or runs on a treadmill while connected to ECG leads, and the machine records heart activity during increasing levels of exercise.
Preparation
Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended. Patients may need to avoid heavy meals or certain medicines before the test.
During Test
Speed and incline of the treadmill are gradually increased while ECG, blood pressure, and symptoms are monitored. The test usually lasts 10–15 minutes.
Post-Treatment
After stopping, the patient is monitored while resting to see how quickly the heart rate and blood pressure return to normal.
