Born on April 2, 1979, Prof Dr Amit Thapa is a distinguished neurosurgeon with an extensive professional background, including an MBBS from BPKIHS (Dharan), MS in General Surgery from PGI (Chandigarh), and MCh in Neurosurgery from AIIMS (New Delhi). He is an International Fellow of the American Association of Neurosurgical Societies and has completed a fellowship in brain and spine endoscopy. As a pioneer in his field, he has introduced several groundbreaking techniques in Nepal, including fluorescence-based micro-neurosurgery, robotic surgery, endoscopic skull base surgery, and endoscopic and minimally invasive spine surgery.
Dr. Thapa is also known for his innovative use of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in neurosurgery and the neurosurgical ICU, as well as for leading the largest series of brachial plexus injury repairs in the country. His contributions to the medical community extend to editorial roles, serving as chief editor for the Nepal Journal of Neurosciences, and leadership positions, including Chairman of the Spine Section and Vice-President of the Nepalese Society of Neurosurgeons (NESON).
He established the Unit of Neurosurgery at KMCTH, which was subsequently recognized as a Department by Kathmandu University, where MCh programs in Neurosurgery are currently being offered. The department is recognized globally as a World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) Foundation Post Graduate Training Center.
He resides in Kathmandu with his spouse, Prof. Dr. Deeptara Pathak Thapa, and their two children, Aadit and Aadvika.
