Professor Dr. Sunil Kumar Joshi holds a prominent position in Nepal's public health arena. Prof. Joshi is a physician (MD) and has specialized in Occupational Medicine, Diabetology and Ph.D. in Public Health and Community Medicine. He has received Swedish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship from the European Centre of Gender Excellence. He is also elected as Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (FSRSPH), UK.
Prof. Joshi is the first Nepali professor of community medicine under Kathmandu University. Prof. Joshi serves as the Head of the Department of Community Medicine, Chairman of the Institutional Review Committee, and Director of the Nepal Injury Research Centre at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC). He holds visiting professorships at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK, Faculty of Health and Wellness at Sri Sri University in Odisha, India, and the Faculty of Health, Science, and Technology at Nepal Open University. Notably, he initiated Nepal's first master's program in Environmental and Occupational Health at Nepal Open University
Prof. Joshi has played a pivotal role in advising the Nepal Government on policies, strategies, and action plans concerning injury prevention, violence, and disabilities. His contributions include drafting crucial components such as the Post-crash response pillar in the Decade of Action for Road Safety, National Action Plan 2013-2020, and its subsequent extension from 2021-2030. Additionally, he formulated the National Policy and Strategy for investigating, treating, and compensating occupational injuries/diseases, integrated into Nepal's recent Labour Act (2017), Labour Rules (2018), and Social Security Scheme Operational Guidelines (2018).
Prof. Joshi is credited with bringing numerous prestigious international health research grants to Nepal. He has authored more than 150 scientific publications. He actively participates as a member of various national and international scientific committees and serves as the Chief Editor of the International Journal of Occupational Safety and Health (Int. J. Occup. Safety Health). Moreover, he holds esteemed positions as the President of the Society of Public Health Physicians Nepal (SOPHPHYN) and a Board Member of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH).
